Russian Digital Camera Market Presents Unique Opportunity

(Weymouth, MA; Luton, UK) July 22, 2010 . . . InfoTrends has released a report entitled Russian Digital Camera Owners – A Snapshot that offers helpful insight for penetrating the emerging opportunity presented by this market. Based on a survey of nearly 600 Russian consumers, this report examines these consumers’ digital camera purchase decisions, printing habits, and camera usage, in addition to a number of other topics.

Although Russia was hit hard by the economic recession, it appears as though this region is beginning to recover. InfoTrends’ research suggests that this market will exhibit slow growth through 2011, with higher growth resuming around 2012 when the economy is expected to stabilize.

This emerging market has a unique demographic makeup. The digital camera market in Russia is dominated by early adopters that are more affluent than the general population. Therefore, it is not surprising that ownership and usage of expensive cameras such as DSLRs is relatively high, and also that repeat purchases are common among current owners. The combination of low household penetration and high repeat purchases will be effective in driving market growth.

In addition to opportunities around digital cameras, this market also holds promise for those in the photo printing space. According to our survey, Russian males print 2.8 times as many photos as their Western European counterparts, and Russian females print 2.5 times more photos than Western European female digital camera users.

Mette Eriksen, a Director at InfoTrends, commented, “While the Russian digital camera market is in the early adopter phase, stakeholders in the print market have a golden opportunity to influence future printing behaviour. If the industry is diligent in promoting printing as the optimal way to view, share, and preserve photos, electronic viewing and sharing will likely have a lesser impact on the Russian photo printing market than it has in Western Europe and North America.”
