InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ New Report Breaks Down & Sizes Up European Printing and Publishing Establishments

(Luton, U.K.) December 14, 2004…The size and segmentation of the printing and publishing markets in Europe is of great interest to anyone exploring the growth potential for print-on-demand equipment and services. Because there are few, if any, reports exploring the complete range of printing establishments in Europe, InfoTrends/CAP Ventures has released a new report entitled Sizing Report for Printing and Publishing Establishments in Europe.

This report provides an overview of the Western European printing and related industry establishments, detailing the number of establishments as well as the value of shipments to them. It also provides data on a per-country level and establishments by size classes for segments that are critical to the print on demand market.

InfoTrends/CAP Ventures segments the market into specialty, primary, and secondary industries. The primary market provides the most promising opportunities for print on demand products and services. The secondary and specialty markets use digital printing to support their primary services or represent applications, which have the potential to migrate to digital output in the future.

Industry segments and applications covered in this report include:

  • Commercial litho
  • Forms
  • Prepress services
  • Direct mail services
  • Photocopy services
  • In-plant print shops
  • Data centre print departs
  • Advertising agencies
  • Commercial art, graphics
  • Data processing and prep
  • Photofinishing labs
  • Newspaper & periodical publishing and printing
  • Book publishing and printing
  • Finishing

The printing, publishing, and related industries in Europe are diverse and still very nationally-oriented. In 2001, there were more than 313,000 printing, publishing, and print-relates services in Western Europe. Collectively, these establishments represented a €452 billion market.

The 5 largest countries in Europe (U.K., Germany, France, Spain, and Italy) account for more than 77% of all primary establishments. They also contribute just under 75% of the revenue for this group. Like the primary establishments, the secondary and specialty industries are also dominated by the 5 largest countries, accounting for 72.2% of all establishments and about 74.6% of the revenue of all establishments.

“When collecting statistical data, it becomes evident that Europe is not a single country, but an amalgamation of national industries that can serve a common market,” commented Amnon Shalev, a Director at InfoTrends/CAP Ventures. “In that regard, this report does a tremendous job of segmenting country and regional information that is very important for sizing the exact market opportunity by country.”
